It got longer! AJA
Part I
Chapter 1
There was a bright flash of light that shinned through my eyelids. It was cold, very cold, then came a warm tongue that made me feel better. Then I heard two voices one was deep and old. The other was soft and loving.
I soon learned these voices were my father and mother. Once I was able to see and walk, I played with my other seven brothers and sisters. I saw my father was a husky with a reddish-brown fur coat. My mother’s coat was white as snow. Mine was a grayish-brown, but unlike my brothers and sisters they were like my father except they looked like my mother too.
One day my father had left to go home in Nome. A hunter tried to kill my mother she barked, “Run! Run to where I told you!”
My siblings and I ran to the stone ledge to the shelter it gave under it. The little shelter was five feet above the river. The stone cliff was wet, I slipped on the wet slippery stone and fell hind end first into the water with my mother getting farther away from me. Then I went under the current. I didn’t remember anything more.
I woke up to a tone of Russian geese honking to each other.
I whined to them, “Can any of you help me?”
They all flew off honking rapidly, one walked away with his wings fanned out. I followed him, ‘til I saw him head to Nome! He now had his wings down and honking to himself. I whined, “Excuse me.”
He turned and was so startled he fell on his butt, he honked at me, “Yes what do you want?”
“I would like you to help me get to Nome. Please?” I barked then gave him a cute look.
“Oh… alright, alright. Come on little pup.” he honked.
As we walked to the town I asked, “What is your name?”
“My name is Bruce.” the goose honked. I asked why he didn’t fly away. He honked at me and told me he was from Russia. Whatever russia is.
We reached the outskirts of Nome. I thanked Bruce and he honked, “See you around my furry fellow.”
I looked around to see if my father was around and I saw two people lift a bundle of fur that was reddish-brown. He was dead.
I started to get hungry for the hunger in my stomach started to get painful until I couldn’t walk. So, I laid down in an alley, then an old man walked down the alley and saw me cold and starving. He picked up and said, “You are a strange pup, you have the face of a wolf and paws like a wolf, but I see husky in you. Here this should keep you warm. Come home with me.”
As he said the last two sentences he wrapped me in a warm blanket he had draped over himself and carried me to his house. I fell asleep in the blanket. Later, at nightfall, I was roused by the smell of warm milk and some beef jerky. The old man put down in front of me these and I ate them gratefully. The man then started petting me and talking to me he said, “You like the milk and jerky. Well good. You were very close to starving to death. I think I will keep you little pup. But what should I call you?” He paused for a moment or two then he said, “Aha! I will call you Karto. Karto who is part wolf.”
Once he said my name I jumped into his arms and licked his wrinkle little face. He laughed with his blue eyes shining and his gray hair quivering. He put me down, smiled and said, “I would finish eating if I were you and get some sleep. You have a big day tomorrow.”
I ate until the milk was gone and the jerky was chewed and swallowed. Then I curled up deep in the blanket and fell fast asleep with a full belly.
When I woke up the next morning I had a breakfast of small pieces of bread with some more milk. then the old man dressed in his old sports coat, boots, and cap. He then slipped a winter coat on and called to me, "Come on Karto. We have to go to the finish of the dog sled race this morning."
I yipped and barked, "Oh! Sounds fun!"
He walked out of his home with a limp, while I followed him at his side. A man walked up and said, "Hello Jimmy."
"Hello Will," replied Jimmy.
Will looked down at me and said, "Now who is this little fella?"
Jimmy knelt down and said, "This is Karto who is part wolf."
"Really part wolf! Strange? Well he is cute though," Will replied.
Then there was a bang and a light in the sky.
"Oh boy, the 1 mile marker!" Will exclaimed, "Let's go Jimmy."
